Model: ER8411
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.3.1

Hello,

1/

Two of my sites (with the same hardwares) had everything but the routers down after upgrading ER8411 V1 to 1.3.1.

I suspect it's the SFP link to the switch (SG2428P v5.30 5.30.7) that gets taken down.

I have 4 other sites were the issue didn't happen (same hardware, same versions). Possible clue : in all the sites, it's SFP+ cables (not SFP) but possibly from different brands (10Gtek, H!Fiber or Twinax). I've read "Fix the extremely low probability issue of SFP+ port failing to link during reboot." in the release notes, could it be a side effect ?

  • With 1.2.3: port "SFP WAN/LAN3" is on and everything normal
  • With 1.3.1 : port "SFP WAN/LAN3" is off and everything but the router is down (because everything is plugged in the main switch)

I rollbacked to 1.2.3 : everything was back to normal.

Then I tried to upgrade again to 1.3.1 in case it was an exceptional issue : everything down again.

I'll stay with 1.2.3 for now, and I disabled auto-updates on the other sites.

2/

Another very annoying issue regarding this matter : auto-updates apparently doesn't log in "Upgrade Logs", so no clear vision on what has happened and no easy rollback access (had to go for SSH).

3/

By trying to fix this, I first tried to disable the router port that links to the switch, but I made the mistake to disable the wrong one : the WAN one !

Now I'm stuck with no distant access and no one on site before tomorrow. Any idea on how re-enable the WAN4 port ? There is no other ethernet WAN port enable on the router.

Only option I see for now : local PC with Omada Discovery Utility to force the reprovisionning ?

Thanks ahead.

3.

If the controller is local you should be able to re-enable the WAN port, but you must be physically at the site, if it is a remote controller you have no other option than to do a factory reset and adopt again,

@MR.S

3/

Thanks, that's what I've done this morning. And same as the other site : still had to roll-back to 1.2.3 to get everything back on.

strange you have problems with SFP to SG2428P, I have also connected a 10/1GB dac cable from ER8411 to SG2428P switch, never had problems with it. It is connected to SFP+ WAN/LAN2 on the router. I use DAC cable from Unifi.

Yeah I know it's strange. The update 1.3.X was applied to 6 of my ER8411 with the exact same setup/config (apart maybe for the SFP+ cable itself, not even sure). 4 are OK, 2 are KO right after the update and back to normal straight after the roll-back.

But you are absolutely right, I switched from SFP+ WAN/LAN2 to SFP WAN/LAN3 and it is completely dead, the link light is not on and there is no network.

I did a couple more tests here, SFP to RJ45 worked. SFP single mode fiber cable worked but not the DAC cable, I don't know if it's because it's an SFP+ DAC cable, it supports 10/1GB and it's configured for 1GB when connected to SFP+ WAN/LAN2

I've always used [ SFP LAN3 < DAC SFP(+) > SFP ] because it felt more natural than [ SFP+ LAN2 < DAC SFP(+) > SFP ], even though it should adapt anyway. I've read somewhere on the forum about a voltage warning for SFP+ after this update. Could it be a problem like that ?

  @MR.S As you have the issue with 1.3.1, could you try [ SFP LAN3 < DAC SFP(+) > SFP ] with a rollback to 1.2.3 ?

I can't roll back further than 1.3.0, and it has a known issue with SFP+ but the ER8411 is connected to the SG2428P on the ER8411 SFP+ WAN/LAN2 and it works. As I mentioned, the DAC cable didn't work when connected to the SFP WAN/LAN3 on the ER8411 and firmware version 1.3.1

I don't know if it worked before.

SFP+ DAC cables generally do not work in SFP non-plus ports.  SFP non-plus cables WILL work in SFP+ ports.

I had previously confirmed that you cannot use a SFP+ on the WAN.LAN3 port as the router simply wont see the cable as connected.  I dont think this is an issue per-say.   Whatever they changed in 1.3.0 and 1.3.1 seems to be related to the SFP/SFP+ controller firmware module (maybe?) - its possible that this is now expected behavoiur as i said, its fairly standard that a + wont work in a non + port.

Main: ER8411 x1, SG3428X x1, SG3452 x1, SG2428LP x1, SG3210 x1, SG2218P x1, SG2008P x3, ES208G x1, EAP650 x6 Remote: ER7206 v2 x1, ER605 v2 x3, SG2008P x2, EAP650 x2, ES205G x1 Controller: OC300

I hear you guys, but I've been running like that for about a year now without trouble before this version.
